The social media world is changing, and to maximize your social media efforts, it’s important to know where the social media world is right now and where it’s headed.
By the second quarter of this year, there were 2.23 billion monthly active users on Facebook, according to Statistica. That’s huge, that’s the good news, but there’s another piece of information that is important for digital marketers to understand.
Last year, Facebook lost 2.8 million under 25 users in America, according to eMarketer. Originally, eMarketer predicted a 3.4% decline in American users aged 12-17, but the final tally was much worse. The fall was actually 9.9%.
What this means for digital marketers is that Facebook is skewing older. eMarketer expects Facebook to lose another 2.1 million American users under 25. For this year, eMarketer projects a 5.8% decline in U.S. users aged 18-24. If that age group is part of your target audience, where will you now find them?
Facebook-owned Instagram is expected to grow by 13% this year to nearly 105 million users. That’s a much smaller pool that Facebook users, but it is significant. eMarketer projects 9% growth for American users of Snapchat. By the end of the year, Snapchat is expected to have 86.5 million users.
The good news for Facebook? eMarketer expects that Facebook will continue to grow its American user base.
