Last week I conducted a survey of my email subscribers to ask “What is the greatest issue for either starting your business or getting to profitability?” The #1 response was starting or building an email list. An email list is the best way to stay in touch with your customers and potential customers, but how do you start one and how do you build it?
The first part is easy. You need an autoresponder. An autoresponder is simply an automated way to compile an email list and an automated way to send your list periodic emails. I recommend the autoresponder that I use, AWeber. AWeber has an introductory rate of $1 for your first month, so you can try it, and if you don’t like it, you can drop them and try someone else. My bet is that you’ll love AWeber as much as I do.
Second, you need to give people a reason to connect with you. If your goal is to scam people out of their money, please leave now. But, if you truly believe that you can help people and you want to help people, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be compensated for your efforts. If helping others is your motivation, then how will you find people who can benefit from your expertise? When you have an answer to that question, you will know how to build your list.
There are a number of ways to connect with people. A blog like this one is one way and people do subscribe to my email list through this blog. I have also contacted people through solo emails. Most of my promotion lately has been through Facebook ads. There are free ways to build your list also, but as is often true, you get what you pay for.
The key is to build a list of targeted, responsive subscribers. A small list of targeted, responsive subscribers beats a massive list of people who really couldn’t care less every day of the week.
