Top Facebook Stats for 2018

Last year’s most popular post on this website was “Top Facebook Stats for 2017.”  This post is a completely new post on the same subject written for 2018 based on the most recent available statisics.

Facebook remains the 800-pound gorilla in social media, and Facebook marketing is a given for many businesses.  As the most popular social media network, it’s also the elephant in the room when it comes to social media advertising.  Facebook has big momentum and big MAU (monthly active users).  How can you harness this marketing power for your business?

Mary Meeker is the acknowledged guru on internet trends, but last year her report for 2017 wasn’t released until June.  So, until we hear from the expert from on high, this is what I have for you:

Top 10 Facebook Stats for 2018

1. How powerful is Facebook?  Consider these statistics: Facebook continues to be the most widely used social media platform, with over 2 billion users worldwide, which is a 16% increase year to year.  There are over 214 million users in America alone, which means that 79% of Americans are on Facebook.  This makes Facebook a great place to promote your business if you want to reach Americans.  22% of the world uses Facebook, and there are over 1.32 billion people on Facebook every day, according to Facebook.  There are 400 new sign-ups to Facebook every minute.   You ignore this behemoth at your own peril!

2. The move to mobile continues and this move is seen among Facebook users.  DMR reported in November of last year that 1.5 billion users of Facebook do so on mobile devices.  Venturebeat.com reported in July, 2016 that 56.5% of Facebook users log in ONLY on a mobile device.  If you want to reach the world, particularly younger users, your website must be mobile-friendly.

3. Venturebeat reported in February 2016 that 400 million photos were shared through Facebook moments.  We live in a highly visual world, and so photos or other graphics are a must.

4. Going a step further, video sharing on Facebook is huuuuuuuuuuuge.  Mediakix reported last year that “Facebook video posts have increased 94% annually.”  The period that they measured is January 2014 to January 2015.  Expect this trend to continue, and get in on it through Facebook Live and other video posts.   Mediakix also says that the total potential Facebook video viewing audience in 1.71 billion active monthly users.

5. One caution: 83 million Facebook accounts are either bogus or duplicates of other accounts.  The sole purpose of some of these accounts is to spread spam.

6. According to smartinsights.com, users access their Facebook accounts on average eight times a day.  Would you like to have a conversation with potential leads and customers?  Facebook is the best place to have that conversation.

7. Brands post on average eight times a day on Facebook.  Do you see the correlation between Facebook users accessing their accounts and the number of brand posts each day?  How often are you posting?  You likely can’t match the marketing of the big boys and girls , but you can use some of their practices as a guide for your own.

8. Facebook is available in 101languages.  If English is not your first language, you’re not alone.  Did you know that the United States is the second largest Spanish-speaking country in the world?  Internet world stats reported that in June 2017, Spanish speaking internet users were just 8% of the total.  Yet, on Facebook, there were 23 million HIspanic users in 2014.  By the end of 2017, that figure had grown to 26.7 million users, according to Facebook.   Facebook also reports that 82.8% of them are daily users.  For every one of the 101 languages that can access Facebook in their native language, there is a market for products and services.

9. Here’s some good news for small businesses: Facebook Pages with smaller followings generally have higher reach and engagement rates, according to locowise.com.  You don’t have to be big to profit from using Facebook for marketing.   Here’s another way that Facebook is tipped toward small businesses:  User-generated content has generated 6.9 times the engagement of brand-generated content, according to Mary Meeker’s 2017 Internet Trends Report.  Expect this to continue.

Earlier this month, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that less “businesses, brands, and media” would be showing up in newsfeeds, and it has been speculated that this will mean an increase in advertising charges from Facebook.   This is all the more reason to pay attention to the final tip.

10. More than 100 million Facebook users are involved in community groups on Facebook, and this is an area that Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to grow in order to build “the world we all want.”  Zuckerberg is intent on using Facebook to bring us all closer together, “and develop the social infrastructure to give people the power to build a global community that works for all of us.”  How does your business fit with this new Facebook initiative?

The changes to Facebook mean that there will be fewer ads in newsfeeds.  What Facebook wants to do is to encourage more engagement.  The changes are designed to encourage more commenting and responding to comments.  This is perfect for a small business!  If you can create content that gets people talking, Facebook is happy, and you can be happy too!
