The Four Agreements

This year I have been offering some posts on the mindset for success.  Back in the day when my car had a cassette player, I listened to an audio book by Don Miguel Ruiz called The Four Agreements.  Your attitude toward your business will go a long way toward insuring your success and failure.  So, let The Four Agreements of Don Miguel Ruiz be a guide to pave your way to success.

Here are the Four Agreements:

1. Be impeccable with your word.  This has to do with what you speak (or write). Communicate with integrity, in truth and love.  Dishonesty will destroy your business, truth and love will set you apart from all the con artists and other scammers that unfortunately populate the internet.  When your email subscribers, customers, and clients know that you genuinely care for them and are working for their best interests, your business can take off.

2. Don’t take anything personally.  I know this is difficult, but often the abuse that is directed at you says more about your accusers than you.  They’re dealing with their own garbage. Others will often project their issues onto you, and your best course of action is to let it all go.  Empathy and sympathy are one thing, but taking on someone else’s issues onto yourself is not helpful for you or your business.

3. Don’t make assumptions.  Ask questions to clarify what someone else is saying to you. Don’t assume that you know what they’re thinking and work hard to be clear in your own communication.  Follow this dictum and you can avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and needless drama.

4. Always do your best.  Give your best effort every time.  Realize that your best effort one day or one moment won’t be the same as at another time, but make all your efforts the best you’ve got.  When you give your best effort, you avoid self-judgement, self-abuse, and regret.

Use The Four Agreements to set the bar high for your conduct and the conduct of your business and it will make a difference.  What kind of difference?  The difference between people getting to know, like, and trust you, which is critical for success on line and people thinking you’re just another IM hack trying to take their money,

By the way, even if you do 1, 3, and 4 perfectly, you’ll still get some 2.  That’s okay.  Again, don’t take it personally.  Just keep moving forward and you will achieve your goals.
