There are several reasons to build an email list and nurture that list; you can see some of the best reasons in the graphic above. An email list gives you a base from which to build your business and I believe it’s the best base available for digital marketing.
The Radicati Group, a technology research firm reports that there are expected to be close to 2.6 billion email users by the end of this year and over 2.9 billion by 2019. That 2019 figure represents over one-third of the world’s population in that year. That is a massive potential audience for email marketing.
The Radicati Group says “email continues to show steady growth” even while social media continues to grow and siphon off some email traffic. When you think about it, online shopping and other online financial transactions require an email address, so emails are not going away. Email marketing will continue to be a strong marketing performer.
Over 205 billion emails will be sent and received in 2015 and that number is expected to grow by 5% a year, meaning that in 2019 there is expected to be 246 billion emails. While that’s a huge amount of traffic, consumer email traffic is expected to grow faster than business email, 6% to 3%. Either way, there’s a lot of competition and it will take great advertising to cut through all that clutter.
Spam and “graymail” that slip through spam and security filters will continue to grow. When using email for marketing, it is essential that what we send not look in any way like spam. If our readers believe we’re spammers, they’ll unsubscribe or otherwise not read what we send them. Secondly, our emails will get blocked by spam and security filters. Either way, our business will be damaged.
