How To Successfully Monetize Your Blog

 

Like you, I’m on a few email lists.  One of them is from Jeff Goins, who’s a great guy to know if you’d like to become a writer.  In an email last week, Jeff spoke about the four essentials to making money from a blog.  Here they are:

  • A clear message
  • A powerful platform
  • A committed tribe
  • A product to sell

Let’s walk through each of these.

The Four Essentials for Monetizing Your Blog

  1. A clear message.  The first “c” of the 7 C’s of communication is clarity (the other six are concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete, and courteous).  What is clarity?  It’s the quality that gets your message across to your audience so that they receive what you intended to say.  One of the issues in communication is that words have different meanings for different people.  It’s best to keep your messages simple in order to best convey what you intend to say.Without a clear message, your blog posts will meander and bore your readers.  They’ll wonder what you’re trying to say.  Clarity isn’t just about what you say, it’s also about how you say it.  With the average attention span today, anything that is confusing will limit or destroy the impact of your message.  Every touch point that others have with you and your business will shape how they think of you.  Leave a positive impression by presenting a clear message.
  2. A powerful platform.  The best blogging platform hands down is wordpress.org.  WordPress.org is the most popular blogging platform in the world for a reason.  It gives you control over every aspect of your website, it allows you to add features like an online store, a membership area, landing pages, sales pages, you name it.Another great feature of wordpress.org are the over 45,000 free plug-ins that will power up your website and maximize your impact. All you need is a domain (I recommend your name for this, and .com), and a hosting company (see my recommendation under the Recommended Resources tab).
  3. A committed tribe.  As you fill your blog with valuable content, you will build a tribe, a group of loyal readers and subscribers (you do have an email list, right?), who are interested in your clear message.  Your committed tribe are those most likely to purchase from you since you’ve given them reasons to know, like, and trust you through your valuable content.As you build your relationship with your tribe through your blog, your email list, social media, and other forms of communication, your tribe will learn to know, like and trust you more and more.  In time, what was once a social relationship can become a business relationship that benefits you and them.
  4. A product to sell.  If your blog is part of your business, what will you sell?  Have you chosen a niche?  Are you writing for that niche?  Tonyseel.com is pitched at marketing, particularly internet marketing.  The way that I help marketers is by providing resources on advertising that help them sell their products and services.  Without powerful marketing, it is next to impossible to sell products and services on the internet or elsewhere.  What do you have to sell?  It could be your own products and services or products and services that you sell as an affiliate for other product creators.  Whatever it is, without something to sell, your blog is merely a hobby.  There’s nothing wrong with hobbies, but if your goal is to monetize your blog, you’ve got to have something to sell.
